Externship Details:

Organization Description:
The Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) is a university-based public health program. LOHP’s mission is to promote safe, healthy, and just workplaces and to build the capacity of workers and worker organizations to take action for improved working conditions. We develop training and educational materials to engage workers in advocating for better working conditions. We conduct research to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, document the impact of unsafe working conditions, and identify policy solutions. We support the development of protective policies.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
As a program coordinator, the sponsor is responsible for developing, conducting, and evaluating educational programs and materials for different worker populations. She is also responsible for developing partnerships with organizations and agencies that can help promote safe, healthy and just working conditions. Upcoming activities in 2020 include a 3-day Young Worker Leadership Academy for high school students, a collaborative project with the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative, and worker training with union hotel housekeepers on ergonomic hazards.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
The Extern will participate in staff planning meetings for the Young Worker Leadership Academy, and meet with other program staff about other projects of interest (www.lohp.org) to the Extern. If time permits, the Extern will be given a small web research project to identify resources for the YWLA or other worker-serving project, or a small project to draft an informational flier or infographic.
