Externship Details:

Organization Description:
The Southwest Fisheries Science Center is the research arm of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service in the southernmost portion of the U.S. West Coast. Center scientists conduct marine biological, economic and oceanographic research, observations and monitoring of living marine resources and their environment, on the impacts of environmental variability and climate change on marine ecosystems, and on fishery and conservation socio-economics, with a goal to ensure that the region's marine and anadromous fish, marine mammal, marine turtle, seabird, and invertebrate populations remain at sustainable and healthy levels.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
The Sponsor is responsible for conducting economic studies and regulatory analysis of issues concerning commercial marine fisheries for highly migratory finfish species off the U.S. west coast, and writing and presenting reports and peer reviewed publications to document research findings.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
The Extern will meet with the Sponsor and other program staff to discuss the scope of work conducted at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center. If time permits, the Extern will be provided an overview of the regulatory process governing U.S. West Coast commercial fisheries and an orientation to environmental-economic issues that arise in marine fisheries operation.
