Development and Alumni Relations (DEVAR) provides leadership and professional expertise to advance UC Davis’ distinctive mission by securing private support, engaging constituents, and fostering a culture of philanthropy. The Office of Proposal Services within DEVAR is a highly specialized writing center of excellence that serves DEVAR colleagues and UC Davis leadership. Our strategic philanthropic messaging enhances the university’s efforts to secure strong private support that amplifies UC Davis’ impact. We help craft powerful cases for giving through creating inspiring custom documents for individual donors and select corporate and foundation prospects; crafting language that helps crystallize the vision and secure internal buy-in; and sharpening talking points and providing tangible tools for focused donor conversations.
Sponsor's Responsibilities:
As director of Proposal Services, the sponsor leads a centralized unit charged with partnering with university leadership and frontline fundraisers in the creation of gift proposals at the $1M level and above, concept papers for multidisciplinary initiatives, campaign case statements, and other high-stakes fundraising and strategic messaging materials. The sponsor manages, coaches and serves as editor for four full-time Communications Specialist 4 writers.
Extern's Proposed Duties:
The extern will observe the director's interactions with direct reports and colleagues, sit in on staff meetings and meet with other DEVAR staff. Meetings with other DEVAR staff can be tailored to the extern's interests (e.g., other development communicators, frontline fundraisers, leadership, etc). The extern will be given an overview of a multibillion comprehensive campaign and the role of donor communications within that context, view samples of work and the suite of self-service tools that Proposal Services has created for fundraisers, and (depending on dates) attend staff meetings. The extern will need to sign a donor confidentiality agreement.
