Organization Description:
FNA Medical Group is a small private physician practice that specializes in ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and core biopsy of masses in the thyroid, breast, neck, salivary glands, lymph nodes, etc. Patients are referred by over 325 different doctors annually for biopsy to diagnose cancer and other diseases. Staining of slides and microscopic interpretation are done onsite while the patient waits. We can diagnose cancer as soon as 5 minutes after biopsy. The sponsor does both the biopsy and microscopic interpretation. He trains cytopathology fellows and medical school faculty from UCLA, UCI, and USC and lectures on ultrasound-guided FNA at national and international conferences.
Sponsor's Responsibilities:
The sponsor takes a short history and performs a brief physical examination on all patients referred to him. He scans the mass in question, performs an ultrasound-guided FNA, and does a core biopsy if needed. He makes slides from the aspirates that are stained by his assistants while the patient waits. He examines the smears microscopically for adequacy and makes a preliminary diagnosis. A final diagnosis is rendered the same or next day. A written pathology report is sent to the referring physician. The sponsor combines family practice, radiology, and pathology into a single unique subspecialty practice. There are only a few dedicated cytopathologist-operated FNA clinics in the United States.
Extern's Proposed Duties:
Observe and ask questions. Learn why history and physical examination are important. Watch ultrasound scans and needle biopsies. Observe microscopic diagnosis of cancer. Free lunch. If you are assigned on a Wednesday, the externship may be in my Los Alamitos, CA office (Orange County). On Saturday, January 18, 2020, externs will be invited to a free buffet brunch at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood where I will discuss medical school admission requirements. You will also see a great magic show. Note that instruction for Spring 2020 at UCB starts Tuesday, January 21, 2020.
