Organization Description:
The U.S. Coast Guard is a military, multi-mission, maritime service within the Department of Homeland Security. As one of the nation's 5 armed services, its core roles are to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic & security interests in domestic & international maritime regions. The SFLC Bay Area detachment provides 24/7 engineering & maintenance services to 100 cutters while underway or at home port. Approximately 200 of SFLC’s 1800 employees work in Oakland and Alameda. The Long Range Enforcer Product line supports the national security cutter and the polar icebreakers.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
The sponsor serves as a senior electrical engineer, the technical expert for operation, maintenance, testing, and improvement of shipboard electrical & automation systems. Areas of responsibility include diesel, electric & gas turbine main propulsion, electrical power generation & distribution, lighting, motors, boat launching & recovery, steering, HVAC, refrigeration, compressed air, hydraulics, aircraft support, alarms, and instrumentation. The sponsor provides remote & on scene technical support to afloat units, plans & designs system upgrades, conducts tests, and advises senior officers.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
U.S. citizenship required. No weapons, alcohol, tobacco, vaping, or illegal drugs. The extern will observe the sponsor’s daily routine and will likely spend some time shipboard at Coast Guard Island to better understand the complexity of Naval Engineering systems on a large cutter. One day will be spent in the Oakland Federal Building, rotating through the various contracting and logistics branches. Depending upon the extern’s interests in mechanical/electrical systems and the externship duration, a suitable design or analysis subproject for a system upgrade or new system will be offered.
