Organization Description:
The San Mateo County Superior Court is a court with 28 judges and almost 300 employees. It is the trial court for San Mateo County, handling all types of criminal, civil, family law and juvenile cases.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
As the Presiding Judge of the San Mateo County Superior Court, the sponsor is responsible for managing the court and its employees on a day-to day basis. Part of the Presiding Judge's responsibilities include assigning trials and other cases to specific judges.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
The extern will be given a behind-the-scenes look at how a Superior Court is managed. The extern will be able to observe trials, preliminary hearings, and other types of proceedings, depending on the extern's specific interest. For example, some externs enjoy criminal trials, while others are more interested in civil cases. The extern will also be taken to lunch with the sponsor and at least one other judge who will likely be a judge in the extern's area of interest. This is an ideal externship for someone who is considering going to law school.
