Bristol-Myers Squibb (https://www.bms.com/) is a large pharmaceutical company working on the sale and development of medicines to treat serious diseases. ~20,000 people are employed worldwide (Europe, Asia, North and South America).
The Redwood City site has ~300 employees and is focused on research and development, primary in the field of cancer. Most employees are scientists or research associates, along with a small portion of other functions (HR, IT etc.)
Sponsor's Responsibilities:
Sponsor works on developing therapeutics for cancer: Reading scientific literature, discussing ideas and hypotheses in meetings (from small group to large departmental meetings), running experiments in the laboratory, analyzing experimental data and preparing graphs, images etc. for presentation slides, presenting data to group, and so forth.
Extern's Proposed Duties:
Externs will observe sponsor at work - hopefully, there will be some time spent in the laboratory as well as in meetings. Sponsor will give overview of company and work environment. Will try to arrange meetings with colleagues who work in other areas of research or non-research. Please come prepared with questions about the job, field, industry etc. and we will do our best to answer them.
