Externship Details:

Organization Description:
Zone 7 Water Agency provides water supply and flood control services to the Livermore-Amador valley in the East Bay. The flood control section deals with long term planning of flood control facilities and maintenance of existing facilities, balancing the need for flood infrastructure with habitat preservation, environmental protection, watershed studies, and public recreational usage. Channel clean-up, volunteer activities, and public outreach also play a large part in the section’s effectiveness.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
As project engineer in flood control, the sponsor is responsible for channel and facility repairs and upgrades while managing multiple contractors and consultants. GIS, surveying, drafting, and road and channel design work figure heavily into the sponsor’s role. Sponsor is also responsible for regularly inspecting many miles of flood control channels as winter storm season progresses, monitoring and identifying damage sites and implementing emergency repairs as needed. Software tools used include MS Project, ArcGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and HEC-RAS.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
Extern will be invited on field trips to assess riparian zones, observe completed construction sites, and support development of as-built design drawings. Extern may participate in topographic surveying, environmental monitoring, AutoCAD / ArcGIS tasks, and GIS digitization, depending on interests. Extern will have the opportunity to use GIS field apps and imaging equipment, to observe hydrologic modeling tools, and to explore as-built drawings of water treatment and flood control infrastructure. Would welcome civil/enviro engineering or landscape design/city planning students in particular.
