HDR is an employee-owned architecture, engineering and consulting firm that provides a total spectrum of services. Founded in 1917 the company consists of nearly 10,000 employees and most recently the company was ranked No. 7 in Engineering News-Record's 2019 Top 500 Design Firms. This externship will focus on the HDR transportation, structural, and water engineering divisions in the Walnut Creek office, which encompasses roadway and rail design, transit and traffic planning, geotechnical studies, bridge design, structural and process components of water and wastewater treatment plant design, and construction of these facilities.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
Staff engineer responsibilities include completing traffic planning or geotechnical studies, designing roadways and railways, bridges, water-bearing structures and building facilities, or water and wastewater facilities according to industry standards, using computer aided drafting and 3D design tools, calculating quantities, coordinating designs with other team members and civil engineering disciplines, and ultimately creating plan sheets for project construction. Client meetings and site visits are occasional and depend on the project. Involvement in the company’s office activities is also encouraged, including advanced trainings and social events.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
The Walnut Creek office is comprised of professionals from HDR’s Transportation Business Group and Water Business Group. Typical projects include planning, design and modeling of roadways, structures, rail, transit, pipelines, pump stations, reservoirs and water/wastewater treatment plants. The externship will be focused on enlightening the student to the tasks and responsibilities they may encounter working in the field of civil engineering at a national engineering consulting firm. Project Managers in these fields will hold open discussions about various projects currently underway at HDR. Additional time will be spent connecting with junior level engineers. Depending on scheduling, the externs may attend client, project and staff meetings to help them better understand the many aspects of their potential career path.
