Organization Description:
The law firm works with high-tech companies in Silicon Valley and around the world. The firm handles a broad range of technical areas including electronics, software, networking, wireless, the Internet, fiber optics and optical devices, integrated circuits, semiconductor processing and manufacturing, lithography, electronic design automation, programmable logic, mechanical arts, medical devices and more. The firm helps its clients create and manage a patent and intellectual property portfolio.
Sponsor's Responsibilities:
The sponsor is an attorney practicing in the intellectual property (IP) area, specializing in patent law. The attorney's responsibilities include advising, managing, and helping protect client's intellectual property rights. Daily skills include reading, writing, analysis, and understanding of client's product, market, and technology. The attorney also interacts and provides customer service to client.
Extern's Proposed Duties:
As an extern, you will learn what patent engineers do and how patent engineers help high-tech companies protect their new innovations and technologies. The extern will learn about the patent system and the U.S. Patent and Trademark office. The extern will experience first-hand working at a small law firm.
Since many of our clients are in high tech, it would be helpful if you are majoring in science, engineering, computer science, or another technical field. However, this is not an absolute requirement because you can also learn about lawyers, paralegals, and other positions at the law firm.
