Organization Description:
Winton Middle School is one of 5 middle schools in the Hayward Unified School District. We serve about 750 7th and 8th grade students from mostly working class and/or immigrant families, 97% students of color. We are proud to provide a holistic offering to our students, including cultural clubs (e.g. Black Student Union, MECHA, etc.), student created clubs, and a variety of fun activities throughout the year. Our test scores are also consistently higher than our sister middle schools.
Sponsor's Responsibilities:
As English Learner (EL) Specialist I am the prime advocate for this population, representing about 23% of our students at meetings as well as by serving as a resource for teachers when planning lessons or requiring research or data. Behind the scenes I am tasked with all state and federal compliance regarding this population including monitoring academic progress, completing exit requirements, and administering the annual English proficiency assessments. I also coordinate the state required EL parent committee, which must have an elected board and monthly meetings.
Extern's Proposed Duties:
Depending on time and availability, the extern may observe the EL Specialist in a variety of meetings, interactions with EL students, or learning about the many state and federal required tasks that must be completed. If time allows and with teacher permission, externs may observe classroom instruction.
