Externship Details:

Organization Description:
The externship would be based out of the Ventura Orthopedics office in Simi Valley, CA. Ventura Orthopedics traces its roots back to the 1930's. Our physicians, physical therapists and staff have been dedicated to serving the people of Ventura County since it’s inception. We are now one of the oldest group practices in California. Our physicians have served as leaders of numerous county and state orthopedic and medical societies. Throughout the past, many of our physicians have served as Chief of Staff as well as many other leadership roles at various hospitals in Ventura County, which is a heritage that continues to this day. Our expertise in shoulder, wrist, hand, knee, elbow, spine, hip, foot and ankle care is evident in the exemplary fellowship training held by many of our physicians as well as in the outstanding clinical facilities in which we care for our patients.

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
Dr. Davis specializes in advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques involving the shoulder, elbow and knee. Minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques minimize peri-operative morbidity and in most cases results in a superior outcome and quicker recovery when compared with traditional techniques. The practice also excels in the application of the latest technologies in joint replacement surgery of the shoulder and knee. Dr. Davis also has extensive experience in the treatment of traumatic conditions of the skeleton utilizing the latest advances in intramedullary devices as well as locked compression plating techniques. These devices have revolutionized the treatment of complex peri-articular fractures allowing stable fixation despite less invasive techniques, ultimately minimizing co-morbidities, and enhancing functional recovery from injuries.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
The experience would expose the student to the day to day workings of a medical office-specifically orthopedic surgery. The student would shadow the surgeon in the office in the evaluation and treatment of patients and their orthopedic conditions. The option of viewing surgery is available if the student is proactive in obtaining appropriate clearance from the local surgical facility, which is easily done. The student is expected to arrive on time, be well-dressed, and prepared to ask lots of questions. It is an opportunity to observe and learn in an engaging environment.
