Organization Description:
Partnerships to Uplift Communities (PUC) Schools is a non-profit public charter school organization. We have schools located in Northeast Los Angeles and the Northeast San Fernando Valley. Our schools serve low-income communities and all of our high schools are recognized as high performing schools in California. Our Special education programs are designed with the philosophy that all all children can learn if given the right supports, so all of our programs believe in including students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Services are provided through collaboration, co-teaching, and flexible setting to best support the growth and development of all students.
Sponsor's Responsibilities:
I oversee the special education program and professional development of eight of our schools in the San Fernando Valley. In a typical week, I will visit 6 of my eight schools to support the special education teachers and their administrators with complex cases, special education program development, teacher professional development and Individualized Education Program (IEP) development.
Extern's Proposed Duties:
The extern will be able to observe my coaching of teachers, development of special education programs in the public school setting, potentially attend an IEP meeting (with parent permission), understand and help to plan professional development, shadow a special education teacher for a day, and develop and understanding of special education laws and procedures.
