Externship Details:
Organization Description: San Mateo County SELPA is located within the San Mateo County Office of Education. We provide support and technical assistance to special education departments across the San Mateo County region and supervise service to students and children from infants to age 22 who receive special education services. Services may be mild to intensive in nature and may range from speech services to intensive mental health supports.
Sponsor's Responsibilities: The SELPA office has a range of staff supporting programs for students in early start and preschool programs, mental health programs, juvenile justice settings and school based settings. We do public policy and inter-agency collaboration work related to education and the integration of education within the larger framework of community based organizations in the region and the state.
Extern's Proposed Duties: Depending on the extern's time frame and interests, we will arrange an experience that may include observation of interactions and duties of the SELPA staff, attendance at regular meetings, and the opportunity to meet and/or interview key stakeholders from San Mateo County in interest areas (previous externs have met with County Superintendent, Equity Coordinator, Board Members, etc.) Site visits to unique programs of interest to the extern may be arranged depending on the number of days the extern has available for participation, including specialized preschool, juvenile hall, transition-age youth programs, etc.
On January 14 there is an opportunity to participate in a full day of training on alternative dispute resolution skills.
