Externship Details:

Organization Description:
Riley Hospital for Children is the 6th largest children's hospital in the country. The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology is comprised of a very busy clinical service and engaged in a large number of research studies. Riley also has one of the largest cystic fibrosis (CF) centers in the country. Research areas in the Division include the CF respiratory microbiome, novel methods to assess early CF lung disease, pulmonary complications of prematurity, respiratory dysbiosis in infantile wheezing, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. More information on the Division can be found at https://medicine.iu.edu/departments/pediatrics/specialties/pulmonology/

Sponsor's Responsibilities:
I spend 40% of my time in administration, 40% in research, and 20% in clinical care. My administrative responsibilities include overseeing the CF Center, the CF clinical trials network site, the Indiana state CF newborn screening program, and the pulmonary function lab. My research is supported by the CF Foundation and NIH, and focuses on early CF lung disease and pulmonary complications of prematurity.

Extern's Proposed Duties:
The extern will observe the clinical care being delivered at the CF Center in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, pulmonary function testing, and research meetings. Because this experience involves exposure to protected health information, he or she will need to complete HIPAA training prior to any clinical exposure. Because some of the research being conducted involves proprietary information, a signed confidentiality agreement may be required as well.
